What I wear is pants. What I do is live. How I pray is breathe.

WHAT IS THE HUMAN & THE HOLY (H&H)? H&H is an intentional, continually emerging community of adults who come together once a month from October to May to explore and cultivate the mystical and prophetic dimensions of faith and to pursue together the deeper meanings and implications of Jesus’ invitation to abundant life. As a spiritual formation community we are committed to supporting and encouraging each other to live lives marked by thanks and praise, generosity and mercy, radical amazement and deep sympathy, joy and justice. We hope to consciously offer our lives as gifts for the good of others and all God’s creation.
WHAT BRINGS YOU TOGETHER? H&H has three primary goals: first, to encourage adult seekers and practitioners of faith to move beyond the rudiments of religion and to go deeper in their understanding and lived experience of a Christian spirituality that is contemplatively awake and prophetically responsible; second, to create a community of learning and mutual care united by the common desire to listen and respond more fully to the presence of God in their lives and in the world today; and third, to support each other in ongoing personal transformation while encouraging each other to practice tangible ways of participating in social transformation and the well-being of the earth.
WHO COMES TO H&H? While grounded in the life and teachings of Jesus, H&H is inclusive in spirit and progressive in perspective, honoring and welcoming both Christians and those walking other spiritual paths. Like you, we are both overwhelmingly ordinary and astoundingly extraordinary. All genuine seekers, apprentices, and artisans of faith are welcome as we strive to honor each person’s sacred journey regardless of race, creed, age, gender, or sexual orientation.
WHAT DO YOU VALUE? Over the years we have grown in our appreciation of genuine, reverent dialogue, striving to listen as much as we talk. We value deep questions more than stock answers, the silence and the struggles from which they emerge, laughter as well as tears, shared stories along with shared meals, and faith committed to contemplation and compassionate action. We tend to understand faith less as assent to propositions than as an unfolding mystery and a chosen way of being in a world both filled with heartache and dipped in grace. Each gathering includes four characteristic movements: silence for reflection and prayer, reverent dialogue, thoughtful presentations, and simple ritual.
WHERE AND WHEN DO YOU MEET? We meet from October to May the 3rd Sunday of the month from 1:30pm – 5:30pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pomona, CA.
WHAT IS THE THEME FOR 2013-2014? Our theme is HOW I PRAY IS BREATHE. What does it mean to pray? How do we nurture our relationship to the divine? What is prayerful living? Is it important that our prayer develop as we develop in other areas of life? What is the relationship between prayer and compassionate action, prayer and kinship with the earth, or prayer and the new universe story? We will explore different understandings and practices of prayer within the Jewish-Christian tradition drawing on classic and modern guides such as Jesus, St. Benedict, The Cloud of Unknowing, Julian, Hildegard, Teresa, Etty Hillesum, Abraham Heschel, Matthew Fox, Simone Weil, Mary Oliver, and others.
