SUMMARY:The Human & the Holy (H & H)
DESCRIPTION:The Human & the Holy \n  \nA  SPIRITUAL FORMATION COMMUNITY \n  \n♦Encouraging One Another to Live Lives of Spiritual Depth♦ \n\n♦ AN  INVITATION  TO   \nCHRISTIAN  SPIRITUALITY ♦ \n  \n♦   HOW  I   PRAY  IS   BREATHE  ♦   \n  \nWhat I wear is pants. What I do is live. How I pray is breathe.                \n~ Thomas Merton \n\nWHAT IS THE HUMAN & THE HOLY (H&H)? H&H is an intentional\, continually emerging community of adults who come together once a month from October to May to explore and cultivate the mystical and prophetic dimensions of faith and to pursue together the deeper meanings and implications of Jesus’ invitation to abundant life. As a spiritual formation community we are committed to supporting and encouraging each other to live lives marked by thanks and praise\, generosity and mercy\, radical amazement and deep sympathy\, joy and justice. We hope to consciously offer our lives as gifts for the good of others and all God’s creation. \n  \nWHAT BRINGS YOU TOGETHER? H&H has three primary goals: first\, to encourage adult seekers and practitioners of faith to move beyond the rudiments of religion and to go deeper in their understanding and lived experience of a Christian spirituality that is contemplatively awake and prophetically responsible; second\, to create a community of learning and mutual care united by the common desire to listen and respond more fully to the presence of God in their lives and in the world today; and third\, to support each other in ongoing personal transformation while encouraging each other to practice tangible ways of participating in social transformation and the well-being of the earth. \n  \nWHO COMES TO H&H? While grounded in the life and teachings of Jesus\, H&H is inclusive in spirit and progressive in perspective\, honoring and welcoming both Christians and those walking other spiritual paths. Like you\, we are both overwhelmingly ordinary and astoundingly extraordinary. All genuine seekers\, apprentices\, and artisans of faith are welcome as we strive to honor each person’s sacred journey regardless of race\, creed\, age\, gender\, or sexual orientation. \n  \nWHAT DO YOU VALUE? Over the years we have grown in our appreciation of genuine\, reverent dialogue\, striving to listen as much as we talk. We value deep questions more than stock answers\, the silence and the struggles from which they emerge\, laughter as well as tears\, shared stories along with shared meals\, and faith committed to contemplation and compassionate action. We tend to understand faith less as assent to propositions than as an unfolding mystery and a chosen way of being in a world both filled with heartache and dipped in grace. Each gathering includes four characteristic movements: silence for reflection and prayer\, reverent dialogue\, thoughtful presentations\, and simple ritual. \n  \nWHERE AND WHEN DO YOU MEET? We meet from October to May the 3rd Sunday of the month from 1:30pm – 5:30pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pomona\, CA. \n  \nWHAT IS THE THEME FOR 2013-2014? Our theme is HOW I PRAY IS BREATHE. What does it mean to pray? How do we nurture our relationship to the divine? What is prayerful living? Is it important that our prayer develop as we develop in other areas of life? What is the relationship between prayer and compassionate action\, prayer and kinship with the earth\, or prayer and the new universe story? We will explore different understandings and practices of prayer within the Jewish-Christian tradition drawing on classic and modern guides such as Jesus\, St. Benedict\, The Cloud of Unknowing\, Julian\, Hildegard\, Teresa\, Etty Hillesum\, Abraham Heschel\, Matthew Fox\, Simone Weil\, Mary Oliver\, and others. \n  \nOUR SPIRITUAL GUIDE \nDan Miller is a writer\, teacher\, and spiritual guide. He received M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctorate from the Claremont School of Theology. Dan’s commitment is to be a catalyst for personal\, communal\, and social transformation. His passion is to accompany others on the sacred journey as they cultivate lives of spiritual depth marked by contemplative and compassionate responsiveness to life. \n  \nSpread the Word.  Invite a Friend. \n  \nREGISTERING for the entire series is encouraged. SUMMARY:Day of Prayer & Reflection for Women
DESCRIPTION:THE  SACRED  ORDINARY: \nParticipating in the Liturgy of Life \n  \nA DAY OF PRAYER & REFLECTION FOR WOMEN \n  \nPresenter: Dan Miller\, Ph.D. \nLife itself is the grand liturgy. Not merely in its vastness but in its dailiness with its routine interruptions\, blessed inconveniences\, simple gifts and not-so-simple responsibilities\, occasional catastrophies and miracles. This is where we discover the incomprehensible surprise of living and learn to respond to the divine presence. Come reflect on living a significant life by participating in the sacred ordinary through radical amazement\, gratefulness\, deep sympathy\, and common acts of love. \nNovember is a great time to count our blessings and to take inventory of our lives. Give yourself a day of spiritual refreshment. The day will include presentations\, simple ritual\, quiet prayer\, reflection\, and good conversation. Bring pen & paper. \n♦ SATURDAY\, NOVEMBER 23\, 2013\, 9am – 4pm \n♦ ST. BERNARDINE of SIENA CATHOLIC CHURCH \n24410 Calvert St.  Woodland Hills\, in the Msgr. Richard Murray Parish Hall \n  \n♦ COST: $40 ~ LUNCH & MORNING COFFEE \n     PROVIDED BY THE PARISH. \n  \n~ Don’t Miss this Day!!     Bring a Friend ~ \n  \nDan Miller is a spiritual director\, teacher\, retreat leader\, and writer. SUMMARY:Unhurried Day with Jesus (Orange County\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:What if following Jesus was not only about doing the kinds of things he did in ministry—speak kingdom truth\, express \nkingdom love and demonstrate kingdom power\, but was also about doing the kinds of things he did in relationship \nwith His Father—frequently get away to a quiet place to simply be with Him. Jesus was unhurried enough to pray\, \nunhurried enough to care\, unhurried enough to discern where the Father was leading him. \nYou’re invited to enjoy “An Unhurried Day with Jesus” with a community of likeminded men and women. \nWe will also be acknowledge the publication of Alan Fadling’s An Unhurried Life (InterVarsity Press\, 2013). \nCopies will be available for purchase and Alan will be happy to sign books for any who wishes.   \nWhat to Bring: A Bible\, journal\, pencil\, a spiritual reading book and anything else that helps you enjoy time alone \nwith the Lord. \nDepending on weather\, bring along layers of casual clothing suitable for time you may wish to spend out of doors.
