SUMMARY:The Human & the Holy (H & H)
DESCRIPTION:The Human & the Holy \n  \nA  SPIRITUAL FORMATION COMMUNITY \n  \n♦Encouraging One Another to Live Lives of Spiritual Depth♦ \n\n♦ AN  INVITATION  TO   \nCHRISTIAN  SPIRITUALITY ♦ \n  \n♦   HOW  I   PRAY  IS   BREATHE  ♦   \n  \nWhat I wear is pants. What I do is live. How I pray is breathe.               \n ~ Thomas Merton \n\nWHAT IS THE HUMAN & THE HOLY (H&H)? H&H is an intentional\, continually emerging community of adults who come together once a month from October to May to explore and cultivate the mystical and prophetic dimensions of faith and to pursue together the deeper meanings and implications of Jesus’ invitation to abundant life. As a spiritual formation community we are committed to supporting and encouraging each other to live lives marked by thanks and praise\, generosity and mercy\, radical amazement and deep sympathy\, joy and justice. We hope to consciously offer our lives as gifts for the good of others and all God’s creation. \n  \nWHAT BRINGS YOU TOGETHER? H&H has three primary goals: first\, to encourage adult seekers and practitioners of faith to move beyond the rudiments of religion and to go deeper in their understanding and lived experience of a Christian spirituality that is contemplatively awake and prophetically responsible; second\, to create a community of learning and mutual care united by the common desire to listen and respond more fully to the presence of God in their lives and in the world today; and third\, to support each other in ongoing personal transformation while encouraging each other to practice tangible ways of participating in social transformation and the well-being of the earth. \n  \nWHO COMES TO H&H? While grounded in the life and teachings of Jesus\, H&H is inclusive in spirit and progressive in perspective\, honoring and welcoming both Christians and those walking other spiritual paths. Like you\, we are both overwhelmingly ordinary and astoundingly extraordinary. All genuine seekers\, apprentices\, and artisans of faith are welcome as we strive to honor each person’s sacred journey regardless of race\, creed\, age\, gender\, or sexual orientation. \n  \nWHAT DO YOU VALUE? Over the years we have grown in our appreciation of genuine\, reverent dialogue\, striving to listen as much as we talk. We value deep questions more than stock answers\, the silence and the struggles from which they emerge\, laughter as well as tears\, shared stories along with shared meals\, and faith committed to contemplation and compassionate action. We tend to understand faith less as assent to propositions than as an unfolding mystery and a chosen way of being in a world both filled with heartache and dipped in grace. Each gathering includes four characteristic movements: silence for reflection and prayer\, reverent dialogue\, thoughtful presentations\, and simple ritual. \n  \nWHERE AND WHEN DO YOU MEET? We meet from October to May the 3rd Sunday of the month from 1:30pm – 5:30pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pomona\, CA. \n  \nWHAT IS THE THEME FOR 2013-2014? Our theme is HOW I PRAY IS BREATHE. What does it mean to pray? How do we nurture our relationship to the divine? What is prayerful living? Is it important that our prayer develop as we develop in other areas of life? What is the relationship between prayer and compassionate action\, prayer and kinship with the earth\, or prayer and the new universe story? We will explore different understandings and practices of prayer within the Jewish-Christian tradition drawing on classic and modern guides such as Jesus\, St. Benedict\, The Cloud of Unknowing\, Julian\, Hildegard\, Teresa\, Etty Hillesum\, Abraham Heschel\, Matthew Fox\, Simone Weil\, Mary Oliver\, and others. \n  \nOUR SPIRITUAL GUIDE \nDan Miller is a writer\, teacher\, and spiritual guide. He received M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctorate from the Claremont School of Theology. Dan’s commitment is to be a catalyst for personal\, communal\, and social transformation. His passion is to accompany others on the sacred journey as they cultivate lives of spiritual depth marked by contemplative and compassionate responsiveness to life. \n  \nSpread the Word.  Invite a Friend. \n  \nREGISTERING for the entire series is encouraged. Full year: $290\, Second member\, same household: $160.  Fee by the session:$45. For information regarding a payment plan in 3 installments\, see below. SUMMARY:"Eyes of the Heart" Conference in Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Join Benedictine Oblate\, retreat leader\, and widely\nacclaimed author\, Christine Valters Paintner\, as she invites us to consider how viewing the world through the lens of a camera (even a humble cell phone camera!) can become a means of “seeing” the Sacred all around us in a fresh\,\nnew way. Participants are encouraged to bring their cameras so that they\, too\, may capture the beauty of God in the world around us. \nFor more information:\nhttp://abbeyofthearts.com/blog/2013/08/31/join-me-in-chicago-on-october-19th/

SUMMARY:The Enneagram Day Retreat at Potter's Inn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of exploring\, studying and using the ancient Enneagram as a way to understand yourself and to understand others.  John Calvin wrote in The Institutes\, “The greatest way to know God is to know yourself. And the greatest way to know yourself is to know God.”  This day retreat promises an amazing journey of studying to both know yourself and to know God better. \n \nAnissa Ferris (MSW\, LCSW) is a Certified Teacher of The Enneagram and will be our guide and facilitator for the day. She has her own psychotherapy practice with focus areas that include: depression\, anxiety\, co-dependency\, grief\, stress management and eating disorders. In her practice\, she has found the Enneagram very helpful in providing a paradigm for growth for her clients. \nThe retreat will focus on the Enneagram. This diagnostic tool identifies one’s primary personality style with its particular challenges to Christian maturity. It clarifies the primary way one engages relationships and work. It offers ways one can cultivate healthy relational interaction with God and others. It is a great tool for counseling\, spiritual direction and organizational development.

SUMMARY:Nouwen Retreat in Valyermo\, CA
DESCRIPTION:This retreat/workshop focuses on the spiritual journey of Henri Nouwen—which represents the very nature of our own journey reality—highlighting the inward\, outward\, and upward (or Godward) thrust of our spiritual life in which spirituality integrates with psychology\, ministry\, and theology in a seamless fashion. Through Nouwen’s example\, we too can learn to embrace a more integrated life in the Spirit. \nNote: This retreat is primarily designed as an opening weekend class retreat for a Nouwen course under Fuller Theological Seminary. Non-Fuller students can be accommodated as space allows on a first come\, first served\, waitlisted basis.
